In the book of Psalms you will see the word “trust” being used on a repeated basis. As we consider the idea of trust from the book of Psalms we will notice the different aspects of trust. For example in Psalm 112:7 we read about reliant trust. A heart that is fixed on trusting God is a reliant heart and a reliant heart is focused on God no matter what. A heart that is fixed on the Lord is not shaken by trouble of this life because, like Paul, we know whom we believe and we are persuaded He will keep that which we have committed to Him (2 Timothy 1:12).
In Psalm 34:22 we read about redemptive trust. There are three things we need to know about redemption. First, something once possessed was lost, a price had to be paid and power had to be broken. When Jesus died on the cross He destroyed the Devil who had the power of death (Hebrew 2:14). The Lord is the one who redeems the souls of those who trust in Him. We know that we trust Him when we obey Him (Hebrews 5:9). When we hear the word of God, believe it, repent of our sins, confess the precious name of Christ and are baptized into Christ for the remission of our sins, we are trusting in the one who redeems the soul (Mark 16:15-16; Luke 13:3; Romans 10:9-10; Acts 2:38-47).
In Psalm 36:7 we read about resting trust. The only way we can be at rest is when we trust God. This is why Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). Those who are living in sin find no rest, in fact they live a very hard and hopeless life (Proverbs 3:15; Ephesians 2:1-12). There is no reason to live such a life when we can live in peace and with hope of eternal life by trusting in the Lord.
Finally in Psalm 5:11 we read about joyful trust. When we are completely trusting in the Lord we can rejoice. “Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD” (Psalm 144:15). If you want to be happy, trust the Lord. There is only one place to find genuine happiness yet so many continue to try to find happiness in all the wrong places. The Lord wants us all of us to taste and see that He is good and gracious (Psalm 34:8). It is my prayer that we are all encouraged to put our trust in the Lord. When we trust in the Lord He will pour out blessings upon on us. The choice is yours, do you trust in God?
